Weather has been part of cinema almost from the beginning. Rain creates atmosphere, fog hides danger and snow isolates characters, but tornadoes became one of the most powerful visual symbols of extreme weather.

The Wizard of Oz — 1939

The tornado carrying Dorothy away from Kansas remains one of the most recognizable storm sequences in film history. The science is secondary; the tornado acts as the gateway between the ordinary world and Oz.

Twister — 1996

Twister brought storm chasing, supercells, Doppler radar and tornado research into mainstream entertainment. Its storms are deliberately exaggerated, but its setting draws on real meteorological research.

Hard Rain — 1998

Torrential rainfall turns an entire town into a flooded landscape. Floods work particularly well on screen because roads disappear, buildings become islands and escape routes vanish as the water rises.

The Perfect Storm — 2000

The story associated with the fishing vessel Andrea Gail made the North Atlantic itself the main antagonist. Wind, waves, atmospheric pressure and the vulnerability of a small boat combine into one of cinema's most famous storm stories.

The Day After Tomorrow — 2004

The film imagines extremely rapid climate disruption, huge storms, flooding and abrupt freezing. The timeline is highly unrealistic, but the movie helped bring climate, ocean circulation and extreme weather into popular culture.

Geostorm — 2017

A fictional satellite network designed to control Earth's weather begins generating disasters instead. It is science fiction, but it plays with a recurring human idea: whether weather itself could ever be controlled.

Into the Storm — 2014

Modern visual effects allowed filmmakers to put audiences directly inside an extreme tornado outbreak.

Twisters — 2024

Nearly thirty years after Twister, a new generation returned to the American Plains. Storm chasing had changed enormously, but tornadoes remained just as visually compelling.

A storm needs no motivation. Audiences immediately understand the danger of a black sky, rising water, violent wind or disappearing visibility.

Weather also transforms familiar places. A normal street beneath floodwater becomes strange. A city covered in ice becomes alien. A calm sea in a hurricane becomes terrifying.

Movie storms exist to create tension. Real meteorology exists to describe what the atmosphere is actually likely to do.

Hollywood compresses processes that may take hours, days or much longer into minutes. Real forecasts rely on weather stations, satellites, radar, balloons and numerical models running on powerful computers.
